Biochar is a multipurpose product

Biochar is probably an unknown product to many, or at most it gives hints of some medical aspect. Biochar is a versatile organic material that is produced by pyrolysis. Pyrolysis involves heating biomass in oxygen-free conditions, which converts biomass, such as wood waste, wood chips or other organic material, into a stable carbon material. Biochar is very porous and has a large surface area, which makes it useful in many applications. Biochar is approved for organic production, making it an excellent alternative for organic farming. It is suitable for use as a growing medium, soil improvement or as an additive for compost and dry toilets. Biochar can also be added to compost at any time of the year. It improves the quality of the compost, promotes microbial activity and binds nutrients that are later released from the compost into the soil.

Using biochar in the garden

Biochar is an excellent soil conditioner and substrate support. It improves soil structure, increases water retention and promotes the growth of beneficial microbes. Biochar can bind nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus, so they are not washed away, but are slowly released for plants to use. Its ability to adjust soil pH improves nutrient availability and therefore plant growth. Biochar binds carbon in the soil for a long time, which helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions. When used as a growing medium or soil conditioner, it is recommended to fertilize biochar before use. Due to its porous structure, biochar absorbs nutrients and water, which it then slowly releases for plants to use. Spring is the ideal time to add biochar to the soil. This allows the biochar to bind nutrients and water before the growing season begins, allowing plants to fully utilize its benefits. Adding biochar to the soil in the fall helps improve soil structure during the winter.

Biochar in animal care

Biochar is also used in animal husbandry. It is an excellent base material for animal shelter bedding, as biochar absorbs moisture and odors. This improves the air quality in animal shelters and reduces odors and ammonia emissions. Biochar can be mixed with other bedding, such as straw pellets, hemp or peat. The recommended mixing ratio may vary, but a general practice is to add about 10–20% biochar to the amount of other bedding. Make sure that the biochar is evenly distributed throughout the bedding. This will improve the moisture and odor control of the entire bedding layer. In some cases, biochar can be used as bedding, especially in smaller spaces or individual pens. In this case, the biochar is spread directly on the floor in an appropriate layer. Biochar can improve the insulation and comfort of the actual bedding, which is especially useful in cold weather. It provides the animals with a softer and drier resting surface. In addition, biochar can be used as a supplementary feed for animals. It has been found to improve animal digestion, bind toxins and reduce methane emissions in ruminants. When added to animal feed, biochar enhances nutrient absorption. Biochar can also be used for the same purposes in horses. Biochar can be added to horse feed in small amounts (usually around 0.5–1% of the feed).

A natural and environmentally friendly alternative

Biohansa biochar is a natural product made from hardwood and is odorless. It is an environmentally friendly choice for both gardening and improving animal welfare. The use of biochar can achieve significant improvements in the care of both plants and animals, while promoting sustainable development and reducing environmental impact. Biochar is an effective and environmentally friendly solution that offers numerous benefits for both gardening and animal husbandry. Biochar is a very stable material that decomposes very slowly under natural conditions. This makes it a long-lasting soil conditioner, although its decomposition with animal litter and manure is slow. It does not change significantly during composting.
