Straw pellets are the choice for happy horses

Straw pellets are one of Biohansa's most popular bedding products and have been a growing bedding trend in recent years. Straw pellets are an innovative approach that offers numerous benefits for horses, while promoting sustainability and environmental well-being. Straw pellets are easy for the stable owner to use and a comfortable surface for the horse. When crumbled, they are soft and highly absorbent, thus also contributing to hoof health. The pellets are designed to be solid, but easily disintegrated, ensuring that horses can rest in an ideal stall environment.

Straw pellet properties

The good properties of straw pellets make it possible to create a dry and odorless bedding in the pen. These properties, like the already mentioned absorbency, help maintain cleanliness and prevent the formation of a damp base, thus reducing the risk of bacterial and fungal growth. Unlike many other bedding materials, straw pellets are manufactured to minimize dust. This is especially beneficial for horses with respiratory problems. In addition, the smaller straw pellet bags are convenient to handle and store. Their compact and lightweight construction makes them easy to transport and store, saving time and effort in managing stable work. Larger 500 or 1000 kilo sacks of pellets can be dosed into wheelbarrows, trailers or tractor buckets for spreading. Biohansa offers straw pellets in several different sizes and can deliver them quickly to the stable yard.

An environmental perspective

Straw pellets are usually made from agricultural by-products, utilizing the straw left over from the harvest of grains such as wheat or barley. This type of reuse of agricultural waste makes it a useful and versatile resource, while also reducing the overall impact on the environment. The carbon footprint of straw pellet production is generally lower than some other bedding options. Choosing straw pellets promotes sustainability, as the production process is also more ecological. From an environmental perspective, the story of straw pellets does not end with their use as bedding. Straw pellets stand out for their effective biodegradability, as their waste, together with manure, decomposes naturally within 2-3 weeks. This leaves a minimal footprint on the environment and at the same time contributes to other ecosystems. Overall, thanks to its absorption capacity, straw pellets generate 60-70% less litter waste. Decomposed straw pellets can be reused in agriculture. Decomposed straw pellet waste is an excellent organic fertilizer, returning essential nutrients to the soil and thus also completing a sustainable cycle.

Use as bedding

When straw pellets are chosen as bedding and are first used, the amount of straw pellets needed to set up the pen depends on the size of the pen. If the pen is about 10 m², 135 kg of pellets will be enough to fill it, creating a 3-5 cm thick layer of straw pellets on the floor. For example, 135 kg is obtained from nine 15 kg bags. During daily cleaning, only manure and wet bedding are removed from the pen, so there is no need to add bedding every day. In the future, it is sufficient to add 15 kilos, or one sack, of new pellets to the pen every few days. Over the course of a year, a 10 square meter pen uses about 116 kg of pellets per month. Straw pellets as bedding offer a comprehensive solution for stable management, combining comfort and horse well-being with ecological sustainability. The properties and benefits of using straw pellets extend beyond stable operations, creating a positive impact on the environment. By choosing straw pellets, you can simultaneously enhance the responsible use of all resources and promote a sustainable cycle. The ecological approach to using bedding sets the standard for responsible horse care and stable management, continuously contributing to the green revolution. At Biohansa, we currently have a reduced price on straw pellets, so it's worth taking advantage of this offer! For example, 65 x 15 kilo bags on a pallet cost 279 EUR (normally 299 EUR) and two 500 kilo big bags cost 269 EUR (normally 289 EUR). Prices do not include shipping.
