Improving stable ergonomics with the fall

When autumn arrives in the Nordic region, working in stables becomes challenging. The days get shorter, the air gets cooler, and the rain brings harsh conditions.Improving work ergonomics and safety is especially important to maintain the well-being of both workers and horses despite the challenges of the season. Adequate lighting, mud control and thermal solutions make working in the stable more comfortable and efficient - even in autumn weather.

Lighting

Autumn brings long, dark evenings and mornings, when lighting needs to be in order, both for smooth work and safety. In the north, darkness comes early, so it's worth investing in lighting. For example, energy-efficient LED lighting provides bright, natural-light-imitating lighting. LED floodlights are well-suited for stable yards, walkways and paddocks, as they reduce eye strain and improve visibility. Lights with motion sensors can be used at stable entrances, feeding areas and near the tack room. They only come on when needed and go off when there is no movement. This also saves energy. Using timers and twilight switches, you can have your lights turn on and off automatically at dusk or dawn. Additionally, a smart lighting system can be useful, as it allows you to control the lights remotely, for example via a mobile device, which brings flexibility, especially in large stable areas. Lights should be placed high up, such as on building walls or poles, to illuminate a wide area. Lighting should cover parking lots and entrances to ensure safe entry and exit in the dark.

Avoid slipping

Wet autumn weather brings with it mud and muddy paths with a risk of slipping. In addition, the right solutions help keep the orchards dry. By installing winter-resistant mud control mats on paths and orchards, the risk of slipping can be reduced and movement made easier. The mats are installed under a sand and/or fiber base. Biohansa's Bacher ArenaGrip PVC mats are a convenient option for outdoor arenas, maneges and paddocks. The innovative design and structure of the mats maintain the necessary humidity level on the riding ground, for example, while the drainage system directs excess water away. Similarly, gravel or gravel is an excellent solution for diverting rainwater away from important walkways. A good drainage system is an essential part of mud management. With ditches and culverts, you can divert excess water away from the vicinity of stables and orchards, preventing the soil from becoming waterlogged.

Good tools

Cold and damp weather is a regular occurrence in these northern regions during autumn and winter. Working outdoors in such conditions requires planning to stay warm and dry. Investing in waterproof and well-insulating clothing, such as layering, will help retain heat and keep moisture out. Good boots and waterproof gloves are also essential to keep you comfortable and out of the cold. Ergonomic tools are important, especially when the challenging conditions of autumn make work more physically demanding. Ergonomically designed, lightweight brooms and rakes reduce strain on the back, neck and arms. Choose wheelbarrows with large, air-filled tires. They roll more easily on uneven surfaces, making it easier to transport heavy loads. As an additional tip, scheduling your work so that daylight hours are used efficiently improves ergonomics and makes it easier to complete work tasks. Organize your daily tasks so that outdoor work is done during daylight hours and indoor work is left for darker times. Rechargeable headlamps are ideal for working in areas where yard lights cannot reach. They provide effective illumination when a spotlight is needed. With the right lighting, mud management solutions and ergonomic tools, stable work can be smoother and safer in the fall. Good foresight and the right tools ensure that stable workers and horses remain healthy and happy, even when autumn weather conditions make the job more challenging.
