Annual stable cleaning
For many, a thorough cleaning of horse stables is an annual tradition. In some stables, it is done right at the beginning of summer when the horses go to pasture, in others, it is done later in the summer or closer to autumn, before the horses return to the indoor feeding season . Regardless of the time, the purpose of the annual cleaning is to clean the stable from floor to ceiling and ensure the most hygienic conditions for both people and animals.
Messiness and dustiness alone are not really major health risks, but it is important to remember that as horses come and go, the risk of contracting diseases that can be transmitted to the stable increases. This is perhaps the number one reason for disinfecting and washing - that the stable is regularly cleaned from the inside out. Since washing requires water and detergents, summer is the most natural time to do the cleaning job. Warm air dries the surfaces of the stable faster with good ventilation.
Basic wash
A standard basic cleaning can be easily done with a pressure washer. However, this requires floor drains or other drainage channels to prevent water from stagnating in the pens or in the corridor. The remaining water can be absorbed into the bedding, for example. Wooden structures cannot withstand water, and if moisture remains in the insulation or between the structures, it can result in moisture damage or even mold. If the stable is not made of stone, it is best to use as little water as possible for washing and to use root brushes and buckets to wash the walls. A wall treated with lime paint cannot withstand a pressure washer. It is better to clean a lime wall of old paint and other dirt with a metal brush and then apply a new layer of lime paint.
Before starting the washing, the stable should be emptied of excess items and the pens of bedding. Easily removable dirt, such as dust and cobwebs, can be brushed out of corners and lamps with a broom. Then the surfaces are wetted and treated with detergent. In the dirtiest areas, it is worth letting the detergent take effect for a while. For example, the walls of pens often have stains left by horses leaning on them. The more thoroughly the surfaces are cleaned, the more useful the disinfectant treatment will be.
Disinfectant wash
Disinfection is recommended after the annual wash, whether there have been cases of infectious diseases in the stable or not. Especially if the stable is used for competitions, training, races or other events, the risk of spreading diseases is always higher. In addition to infectious diseases, regular washing and disinfection also reduces the number of microbes and parasites in the stable environment. When choosing a disinfectant, it is a good idea to find out that the product works against certain viruses and that it is suitable for the surfaces to be treated.
There are also reasons to read the instructions for use and safety of the substances before starting work. Some substances should be rinsed well after the exposure time. Food and drinking bowls should be rinsed especially carefully. Substances suitable for washing and disinfecting stables and other animal shelters include Hypofoam, Forteva, Virkon S and Virex. Alcohol-based disinfectants Excitol 20 B and Neoamisept are suitable for use in winter.
Once the stable has been completely washed and dried, it is time to put new bedding in the pens. Depending on what bedding is used in the stable, a new bedding product may be worth trying at this stage. For example, we recommend Biohansa hemp bedding , which is bacteria-free and almost dust-free. Hemp is extremely absorbent and therefore very durable. It takes four bales of hemp to create the base of the pen and the mattress is formed in a few days. It is worth replacing the entire mattress about every 10-12 weeks. Hemp decomposes quickly and can be used after 6-8 weeks.
