Start preparing your fencing and stable in good time

Late summer is a good time to check paddock fencing and prepare the stable for the months ahead. Taking care of minor repairs and necessary purchases in good time means you will not have to start from scratch when autumn arrives.

Safety always comes first in horse paddocks. Over the summer, fencing is exposed to weather, vegetation and the movement of horses, so its condition should be checked regularly.

Walk around the paddocks and check the condition and stability of the fence posts in particular. If a post is leaning, rotten or otherwise damaged, replace it before the problem gets worse. Check gates, hinges and the rest of the fence structure at the same time.

For electric fencing, also check wires, tapes, insulators and any problems caused by vegetation. Sound fencing is part of a safe environment for your horse.

New fence posts where needed

When rebuilding a fence or repairing existing structures, good-quality posts suited to the job make the work easier.

Biohansa offers fence posts for repairing existing fencing and building new fences. When the posts are in good condition, maintaining the rest of the fence is easier too.

Our fence posts are made from round timber with Class A preservative treatment and are supplied pre-pointed for easier installation. Available in several heights and diameters, the posts are designed to withstand Finland's changeable weather. The product comes with a 15-year warranty.

When installing posts, the most important factors are spacing suited to the fence type and ground conditions, and sufficient installation depth. In horse paddocks, posts must withstand the tension of the fencing and possible impacts from horses, so pay particular attention to the stability of corner and gate posts.

Get your stable bedding ready

As well as checking the fencing, prepare for everyday stable work by reviewing your bedding supplies. Suitable bedding affects both stable cleaning and the smooth running of daily tasks.

Straw pellets are one option for horse bedding. Pelleted straw is compact and easy to store, expanding into a fluffier bedding material when wet. Bedding can be added gradually according to the stable's needs and usage.

The bedding is made from 100% wheat straw, without chemical additives or binders. The pellets are 8 mm in diameter and have a moisture content below 10%. The compact pellets are easy to store in bags and expand when wet into absorbent bedding that binds moisture and ammonia effectively.

Nearly dust-free straw pellets help keep the stable dry and the air fresher. Their high absorbency can reduce the amount of waste bedding by up to 60–70%. Used bedding is biodegradable and breaks down into organic fertiliser in approximately 2–3 weeks.

Straw pellets are available in 15 kg bags, among other pack sizes.

Preparing early saves time

Getting the stable and paddock fencing ready does not have to involve major renovation. Often it is a matter of small fixes: replacing a damaged post, checking that a gate works properly or topping up bedding supplies.

When these jobs are done in good time, daily stable routines continue smoothly even as the weather changes and less time is spent outdoors.

Check your fencing, maintain any structures that need attention and make sure you have enough bedding now. Biohansa offers fence posts, straw pellets and other products for horse care and everyday stable work!
