Biohansa Hemp Bedding Features

Hemp bedding is a natural, dust-free, and antibacterial bedding material designed especially for horses, cattle, pigs, poultry, and small animals. It is an environmentally friendly, highly absorbent, and economical solution for stables and animal housing.

Hemp bedding has an absorption capacity of 400–500% of its own weight. It decomposes quickly, breaking down in approximately 6–8 weeks into nutrient-rich compost. The bedding is virtually dust-free, bacteria-free, and safer against fire than many other materials – according to Eurofins laboratory tests, the product does not ignite or self-heat (EETAL-25-00505-1.1, -2).

Material Safety Data Sheet

Biohansa hemp bedding is made from 100% natural hemp fiber (Cannabis sativa L.), with no additives or chemicals. The product is fully biodegradable and compostable.

How to Use Hemp Bedding

  1. Empty the stall and spread approximately 4 bales for a 9 m² stall (about 1 bale per 2 m²).

  2. Remove manure daily and level the surface with a rake from the outside inward. Do not turn the bedding layer over.

  3. Once a week, remove the wet areas and add one new bale of hemp bedding in their place.

  4. Rake the surface layer regularly.

  5. Every 10–12 weeks, empty the stall completely and refill with fresh hemp bedding.

  6. Store bales indoors, protected from rain and direct sunlight.

How Workload Is Reduced

• Thorough cleaning is needed only four times a year.
• Manure piles are reduced – compost piles are about one-fifth the size compared to straw bedding.
• Weekly cleaning time is reduced by 30–60 minutes per stall compared to straw.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can hemp bedding cause colic?
In principle, any bedding can cause digestive issues if animals consume too much of it. The key is to ensure horses always have enough feed and access to exercise, so they do not get bored in the stall.

What is the best way to use it?
Hemp bedding is used similarly to flax, straw, or wood shavings: remove manure daily, wet spots weekly, and add new bedding as needed. Using a close-toothed rake helps preserve good material.
