Peat bedding for animal housing

Biohansa peat bedding is suitable for horse stalls, pens and other animal housing. Peat binds liquid and ammonia and, with regular maintenance, helps keep the resting surface dry and soft. Pack sizes of the same peat bedding differ in quantity and handling, not in their basic method of use.

Instructions for use

1. Preparation: remove old, soiled bedding and clean the floor. Check that drinkers are not leaking and ventilation is working.
2. Laying the bed: open the pack and loosen the compressed material. Spread an even layer that covers the floor and provides sufficient cushioning for the animal. The amount needed depends on stall size, flooring, the animal and your maintenance system.
3. Daily care: remove manure and soaked patches, retaining as much clean bedding as possible. Replace removed material with fresh bedding and level the surface.
4. Monitoring: check surface dryness, odour and bed depth every day. If wet patches spread or odour persists, remove saturated material and check the source of moisture and the ventilation. Adding fresh bedding does not replace removing soiled material.
5. Renewal: replace the bedding according to its condition and your stable routine. Avoid bare patches of floor. The bedding does not need to be soaked before laying in the way some pellets do.

Storage and handling

Store packs under cover, off the ground and protected from rain and meltwater. Keep packaging intact and protect opened material from contamination. Moisture content is a product characteristic: dry storage means preventing additional water ingress, not drying the material out completely. Over-dried fine material may produce dust; handle it gently in a well-ventilated area. Keep away from open flames and heat sources. Allow frozen packs to thaw before opening and spreading. Do not use mouldy material or material with an unusual smell.

Used bedding

Collect used bedding with manure in the designated storage area. Further handling and composting depend on your manure-management system and local requirements. Breakdown rate depends on composition, aeration and moisture; a fixed composting time cannot be promised.
